Start With Age and Cost Together

Age alone does not decide it, and cost alone does not either. The two together do. A cheap repair on a young appliance is almost always worth doing. An expensive repair on an old appliance that has already failed repeatedly usually is not. A practical way to think about it is to compare the repair quote with the price of a comparable new appliance, and to ask how much useful life the repair is likely to buy.

Our cost guide gives typical ranges for planning, and the price that applies to your job is always the written price you approve before work starts. Use the guide for context, not as a quote.

Count the Breakdowns, Not Just This One

Ask how many times the appliance has needed repair recently, and whether the failures are related. One failed part on an otherwise sound machine is normal wear. Several different parts failing in a short period usually means components are wearing out in sequence, and the next repair may not be far behind.

Also weigh reliability: an oven that sometimes works, or a washer that sometimes floods, costs more than the repair bill. It costs time, spoiled food, and, with water, possible floor damage.

Parts Availability and Efficiency

If a part is discontinued or hard to find, repair may mean a long wait, a used part, or no repair at all. We tell you upfront when that is the case, rather than taking the job apart and hoping. Built-in and older models are the most likely to have part problems, so ask about availability before you approve work.

Efficiency matters too, but it should be measured, not assumed. Rising energy or water use, longer cycles, and weaker performance can point to an appliance that is losing capacity. A new appliance is not automatically the efficient choice for every home: size, hookups, and venting all affect the real result.

Questions Worth Asking Any Company

Before you approve a repair or a replacement, ask for the diagnosis in plain language, the full written price for each option, whether the part is new and available, how long the repair is expected to last, and what happens if the same fault returns. A company that cannot answer those questions clearly has not diagnosed the appliance properly.

We lay out repair, repair-later, and replacement options with honest math, and you decide. If replacement is the smarter move, our appliance installation page explains how a new appliance is connected and tested.
